Body Mass Index (BMI)
Kendall to Participate in NYS Department of Health BMI Survey
Each year, a sample of school districts across the state are selected to take part in a survey by the NYS Department of Health that involves reporting a summary of students’ weight status categories. As part of a required school health examination, a student is weighed, and his/her height is measured by the school nurse. These numbers are used to compute the student’s body mass index or "BMI." The BMI helps the doctor or nurse know if the student’s weight is in a healthy range, is too high or too low. No names or information about individual students are sent. The information submitted to the NYS Department of Health is used to develop programs that promote health in children.
In 2017, Kendall was selected to take part in this survey. Parents have the option to exclude their child’s weight status group information from the survey if they wish. If you do not want your child’s weight status group information included in the report we send, please submit your decision, in writing, before January 20, 2017. If you have any questions about the survey, please call Margie Lapp, RN, Elementary School Nurse at 585-659-8920 or Bethanie Mason, RN, High School Nurse at 585-659-8958.
